Voting Power

Different organizations will have different philosophy regarding voting power of their ecosystems. The INK Governance Module's built-in voting modes allow them to choose.

Any DAO at any hierarchical level is constructed with a Board, with the creator as the only member, and a default voting power structure. The voting power is only applicable to the voting process of DAO-level proposals that can only be made by a Board member. Such a default configuration is provided to sub DAOs as well, who can have their own voting powers within their sub ecosystems.

There are three supported modes of voting:

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Board Only” can make proposals to be voted with the power of “Public and Board”, or “Public Only”;

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Public and Board” can make proposals to be voted with the power of “Public Only”, but not with “Board Only”;

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Public Only” can not change the voting power when making proposals.

The DAO creator can choose one of them as the default mode.

The “Public Only” mode is the most democratic. Once the minimum wallets and the minimum votes are reached within the voting window, the Board can tally votes, and the majority of the votes will prevail.

The “Public and Board” mode requires two rounds of voting: the public round that’s exactly the same as the “Public Only” mode, subject to minimum wallets and minimum votes. If the proposal passes the Public round, it will be subject to the Board voting, which is based on the number of seats on the Board. UP-votes more than 50% of the Board seats will pass the proposal as a Resolution.

The “Board Only” mode is the least democratic, akin to the decision making process of a traditional corporation, which should be naturally supported for the suitable organizations. In this mode, one of the Board members can make a proposal that is visible to the public, but only the Board members can vote on it, which passes with more than 50% of the Board seats’ up-voting.

While the default voting mode is set at the DAO’s creation, a proposing Board member can always change it to a more democratic mode, but not less.

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Board Only” can make proposals to be voted with the power of “Public and Board”, or “Public Only”;

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Public and Board” can make proposals to be voted with the power of “Public Only”, but not with “Board Only”;

  • A DAO created with the default voting power of “Public Only” can not change the voting power when making proposals.

The voting window involving public vote is set by the Board proposer when a proposal is made. Proposals to be voted by “Board Only” have no window of expiration.
